Tribe 2011

Posted on 13/09/2011 by Chris

We just had a great night out in London town last night. We travelled to attend Redken's main event in London called Tribe 2011. After a lesuirley train journey we all checked into the Novotel. Then it was off down Oxford Street fro some last minute shopping for some, and a trip to the British Library for the more cultured of us.

The event was held at the iconic music venue, The Brixton Academy. It was a cracking evening of hair, fashion and music. The main hair show was delivered by none other than our old friend and former Moodyhair stylist Andrew Barton. There was much drinking, carousing and merriement before the evening drew to a close at around 1am. We managed to get taxis just in time fro Chris to collapse and fall asleep allover poor Laura! Fortunatley, the gang could enjoy a leisurely 6 hour sleep beforethe train home and back into the salon the next day. Check out our Facebook page very soon for a selection of lurid and incriminating photographs!!

Moodyhair - latest adventures abroad. Chris has just returned to the salon after his recent trip teaching creative haircutting to hairdressers in Toronto, Canada.

toronto Chris

Chris was invited by Redken Canada to teach in their flagship academy in Toronto. As such he is the first ever UK Redken Artist to do so.

This is Chris' third trip to Canada in 2 years, the last being to headline a major show on behalf of Redken in Halifax, NS, again the first Redken Artist from the UK to do so. On this trip Chris was asked to plan and deliver a programme of creative haircutting to 25 of Ontario's top hairstylists. Using a combination of demonstrations, hands on workshops, videos and diagrams Chris delivered a dynamic and inspiring programme of looks and techniques. "It was a huge privilige to be invited to do this" said Chris, "I wanted to make sure the haircuts were creative and inspiring, but also useable and salon wearable". He went on to say "the feedback was really positive, everybody in the class was great to work with, I think we connected really well, I love the Canadian people" Chris will be returning to Canada in May 2012 for their biggest National Event, FUSION '12, again the first ever UK artist to do so. Meanwhile there are more trips planned to the USA.

Denise on Day One. July 1961

Some of our 1960's glamour

This year, Moodyhair (formerly Denise Moody Hairdressing) will celebrate 50 years in business as one of Barnsley’s most reputable hairdressing salons.
It all started back in 1961, when Denise Moody opened her one roomed salon in Darfield, Barnsley. After a busy start Denise noticed some hair pictures in a trade magazine and wrote a letter to compliment their creator. The stylist concerned was non other than Vidal Sassoon, who in 1964, invited her down to spend time studying in his new Bond Street Salon. They have remained friends ever since and to this day Vidal remains her biggest inspiration and mentor.
Denise recently travelled to Los Angeles, where Vidal now lives, and was thrilled to receive a personally signed copy of his new autobiography, she was even more thrilled to see that Vidal had written in the book about her and their first meeting all those years ago.

On returning from London back in the sixties, the salon was immediately redesigned and refurbished and against all the current trends of the day, the hood dryers were ripped out, beehives were banned and the latest geometric, precision haircutting was the order of the day. Everyone said that this new fad wouldn’t last. No one would ever want flat hair with a hard fringe, bobs died out in the 1920’s and salons would go bankrupt with people only coming in every six weeks for a hair cut, instead of coming in for their usual weekly set!
It was during these early years in the 1970’s that Denise Moody Hairdressing began to build the reputation for the quality, creative work that still stands today.
It was also in the 1970’s that the salon’s team of stylists began to grow. In the late 70’s Stephen Moody, Denise’s eldest son, began working in the salon before moving to London to begin a 30 year career with Vidal Sassoon (he now lives in Los Angeles and heads up Sassoon Education world wide). In the early 80’s Denise’s youngest son, Chris came on board and went on to spearhead the salon into winning hairdressing’s first DTi National Training Award and becoming one of the first hairdressing companies in the UK to achieve the Investors in People Award. Chris now works internationally for Redken NYC/L’Oreal as well as teaching and training other stylists through out the UK.
With the new Millennium came more changes as Denise Moody Hairdressing became Moodyhair and new generation of hairdressers moved forward.

Its DIntraforcead's day soon. So time to treat him to te things he may not buy hi

mself. Did you know that 65% of men will suffer from

thinning hair or some degree of hair loss? Did you also know that there are ways that much of this can be slowed down and even stopped, in other words we can treat many cases of thinning hair with products sold here in the salon.

Intraforce is an amazing new technology that will slow down and halt the thinning process in both MEN and WOMEN! In fact Redken are so confident they offer a 30 day money back guarantee, so you have nothing to lose except a receeding hairline! Intraforce consists of a shampoo, scalp conditioner and highly specialised scalp solution that targets the folicles of the hair and begins to reverse the thinning process. These products are aimed for all types of thinning hair in both and women, there's also a formula for coloured hair. The kits start at £39.95 (and in many cases last longer than 3 days) but they do sell out fast, so call the salon and reserve one now. Check out the web site at www.intraforce.co.uk fo more info.

If your tired of waking up to that guy with greying hair, then change him! Or at least change his hair. Redken's Camo Color is a professional, high qulaity Men's hair products that naturally blends away grey hair. It takes between 5-10mins, lasts about 35 shampoos and leaves no re growth of dryness in the hair. the shades are light, medium and dark and are designed to be natural cool shades that do not leave the unatural warm tones that other Men's rpoducts result in. About 40% of our male clients are regularey having Camo to blend away grey, though you'd never know it...and thats the idea.

So if you're wondering what to give this Fathers Day, give your self a new man! Thicker fuller hair in 30 days with Intraforce. Natural looking, non grey hair in 10 minutes with Camo. CAll the salon to make his appointment today, or book online at anytime.

Men's Hair

Men at Moodyhair! We’re often asked what advice we might   give to men about their hair, and to be honest it’s pretty simple; get your hair cut properly!...and no, a grade 3 allover with home hair clippers is not “properly”!

It’s OK to go to the hair salon and get your hair professionally cut and styled, even in South Yorkshire. In fact it’s more than OK, it’s necessary.

Come on chaps, your partners, better halves and members of the fairer sex are going all out to make themselves look as good as possible, the bar has been raised and in the 21st Century there’s no excuse for letting yourself go (or in some cases never having a hold in the first place!)

Here at Moodyhair about 35% of our clients are men (thats a bit higher than the national average) and on most days you’ll see other men in the salon too, so it’s no longer a case of a “ladies salon” to be honest...there’s no such thing anymore.

At Moodyhair we’ll spend time talking to you first about what you like and don’t like. We’ll make recommendations for you, show you examples, pictures and style books so you’re clear on what’s going to happen.

Here’s a few tips straight as a little insight from all of us at Moodyhair:

If your hair is thick and wild you might want to consider shorter layers and the use of thinning shears. Keep the sides and nape close to maintain a squarer, more masculine shape.

If you’re hair is thinning, cut it short. Never confuse long hair with making it look thicker or disguising a thinning top, people really will snigger behind your back!

Consider close crops, a short, textured top and tapered hairlines.

Shorter hair is always easier to maintain, texture through the top keeps it looking a bit more up to date.

Avoid side partings if your over 30 and don’t think because it looked good in the ’70’s and ‘80‘s it looks good now...it doesn’t! Unless you’re a skateboarding, guitar playing cool youth, hair beyond collar length makes you look like a sad old throwback.

They say clothes maketh the man, but bad hair maketh a mess of the whole thing.

To sharpen up start from the top down, get a great hair cut and you’re on to a great start.

If you’re worried about the amount of hair (or lack of it) ask us about Redken’s Intraforce and have a look at the website www.intraforce.co.uk, I’ve been using it for a while now and  getting great results.

Come back soon...next time we’re going to talk about reducing some of that grey hair too!

Summer Colour

Summer’s on the way and this time if year calls for the latest in new hot, hair colour trends.
Moodyhair have been on the road recently with the Redken Connects tour demonstrating the latest in colour trends.
This summer colour is all about the roots! Yes, after years of fashionistas running to the salon to get those dark bands covered, we’re now embracing the re-growth.
The colour look taking fashion by storm is The Ombre look; darker roots fading through the mid lengths into lighter, almost blonde ends.
Not only was the “dip-dyed” look on every single catwalk of all the fashion shows, but a whole host of celebrities, WAGS and IT girls are now sporting the looks.
The colour is achieved by making the root area slightly darker and richer than your natural colour, then using a variety of clever blending techniques, slowly fading the colour to a lighter, softer shade through the ends.
Done well, the transition should be seamless, elegant and very tasteful.
Done poorly, however, it could be a real backstreet, box bleach bodge job!
So don’t try this at home, this technique is definitely one for the salon professional.
Call ahead first to discuss your look as you may well need a little longer appointment time that a straightforward re-touch or high lights.
Although the look can be adapted to naturally lighter hair shades, it is ideally suited to a medium to dark hair colour base.
You also need a certain amount of length for the blending technique to work well.
The shortest layers need to be a minimum of 6-8 inches or longer. So medium to long layered shapes and one length shapes are ideal.
Pair up the colour with some soft, wavey styling and you have this seasons ultimate, sexy summer accessory.

Congratulations to Laura and Sam for their Level 3 competitions recentley.

Our two young stylsts were on great form last week at the Get Ahead Hairdressing Competitions. Laura created and fashioned an elaborate bow hair peice and attached it to mini crimped and pleated hair, teh look was complemented by theatrical black lightening make up and a rather daring mini dress made entirley of plastic tape!

Sam created a a beautiful Geisha inpsired japanse look, with added hair for volume, silk robes and white face make up.

This is not the first time Moodyhair have enjoyed success at these events, having picked up awards at every previous competition. On her first event two years ago Laura was awarded 3rd prize, last year she moved up and achieve 2nd prize and this year she made her hat trick scooping First prize overall.

We're sure there's going to more fame and fortune in store for Laura and Sam as they qualify now to fully fleged stylsits. Even so, on going training will still be a big part of their career. Continuous Professional Development is an important part of everything we do here at Moodyhair.

Both girls are developing a real strength for their styling work, with Laura showing great talent for long hair styling and those creative, special occasion up-do's and Sam is creating some beautiful styling and professional blow dry work.
